Internet speed dropped

Question

My internet speed dropped - what's the cause?

Answer

Multiple things can cause this. Work through the list in order:

  1. Update your network adapter drivers. Outdated or auto-installed Windows drivers are a common culprit.
  2. Set the link to full-duplex. Open Device Manager → your network adapter → PropertiesAdvanced tab, and set Speed & Duplex to the highest supported full-duplex value (for example 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex) instead of Auto Negotiation.
  3. Restart the router. The issue may be on the router side - power it off for ~30 seconds, then power it back on.
  4. Contact your ISP. If none of the above works, the problem is likely upstream. Contact your internet service provider.
