Internet speed dropped
Question
My internet speed dropped - what's the cause?
Answer
Multiple things can cause this. Work through the list in order:
- Update your network adapter drivers. Outdated or auto-installed Windows drivers are a common culprit.
- Set the link to full-duplex. Open Device Manager → your network adapter → Properties → Advanced tab, and set Speed & Duplex to the highest supported full-duplex value (for example
1.0 Gbps Full Duplex) instead of Auto Negotiation. - Restart the router. The issue may be on the router side - power it off for ~30 seconds, then power it back on.
- Contact your ISP. If none of the above works, the problem is likely upstream. Contact your internet service provider.
