Anti-virus
Your habits come first
No antivirus, no matter how advanced, replaces careful use of the PC. Most compromises start with a person, not with a missing signature in security software.
- Avoid untrusted websites, download pages, and random attachments.
- Do not run installers or cracks from unknown sources.
- Keep Windows and your browser updated.
- Use strong, unique passwords and turn on two-factor authentication where it is offered.
When something goes wrong, the cause is usually what was opened, downloaded, or clicked. Security software helps after exposure, but it does not remove the need for judgment.
Windows Defender
Windows Defender is the default recommendation for real-time protection on Windows. It is built in, updates with the system, and is enough for most users without adding another always-on scanner.
| Why it is the default | Details |
|---|---|
| Integration | Works with Windows Security, SmartScreen, and system updates without a separate vendor stack |
| Cost | Included with Windows |
| Maintenance | Definitions and engine updates ship through normal Windows update channels |
| Fit for daily use | Strong baseline protection for browsing, downloads, and common malware |
For a normal desktop, Defender is sufficient. You do not need a second real-time product on top of it unless you have a specific requirement from work, school, or compliance.
About third-party real-time antivirus
Extra real-time suites can hook deep into Windows, change system behavior, and add background work. That sometimes leads to slowdowns, freezes, boot delays, update conflicts, or hard-to-trace errors.
If Defender is already active, adding another always-on antivirus often creates more problems than it solves.
Optional third-party real-time protection
Use this section only when you deliberately want a non-Microsoft real-time product. It is not the default path.
| Tool | Notes | Get it |
|---|---|---|
| Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition | Lightweight third-party option if you do not want the built-in scanner | Download |
If you install one, remove or disable the other real-time product first. Do not run two always-on scanners together.
On-demand scanners
These tools are for manual scans and cleanup. They do not replace Windows Defender for daily protection.
Kaspersky is not available in the United States
Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool may not be offered or supported in every region. Check local availability before downloading.
| Tool | Best for | Get it |
|---|---|---|
| Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool | Broad malware cleanup | Download |
| HitmanPro | Another pass after a primary scan | Download |
| Malwarebytes | Detection and removal workflows | Download |
| ESET Online Scanner | One-time online-assisted scan and removal | Download |
| AdwCleaner | Adware and potentially unwanted programs | Download |
Usage notes
- Keep Windows Defender on for everyday protection unless you have a clear reason to replace it.
- Run on-demand tools when you suspect an infection, then return to Defender as the only real-time scanner.
- Do not stack multiple real-time products. Conflicts and false positives are common when more than one suite stays active.
