Microphone not working
Question
My microphone is not picked up in Windows, Discord, or in-game voice chat. How do I fix it?
Answer
1. Windows privacy (most common on fresh installs)
Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
- Turn Microphone access on.
- Turn Let apps access your microphone on.
- Scroll down and allow access for the apps you use (for example Desktop apps / your browser / games).
2. Default recording device
Settings → System → Sound → Input. Choose the correct microphone under Choose a device for speaking or recording.
Speak and watch the Input volume / level meter move. If it does not move, Windows is not hearing that device. Try another USB port or another cable (for analog headsets).
3. App-specific input
Discord: User Settings → Voice & Video → Input Device (set explicitly, not “Default” if Default is wrong).
In-game: check the game’s audio or social settings for a separate voice input device.
4. Exclusive mode and enhancements
Control Panel → Sound → Recording tab → double-click your mic → Advanced.
- Try toggling Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
- Under Enhancements, try Disable all enhancements if the mic sounds broken or is silent.
5. Driver and firmware
Update the mic’s driver (USB audio, headset, or sound card) from the manufacturer. For wireless headsets, update dongle firmware or receiver software if offered.
If the mic works in Voice Recorder but not in a game, the problem is almost always app permissions or wrong input selected inside that app.
